DVD Picture fine, lousy sound.

Hello;

I am trying to get my Pioneer DVD-RW, DVR 107D to work with a DVD Movie(Dr.
ZHIVAGO MPEG-2) on my PC. The picture quality is fine the sound is all
broken up into bits and pieces. Here is a profile of my machine;
Windows XP Pro, ASUS A7V Motherboard, 1.2 GHz AMD microprocessor, 384 Mb
SDRAM, Media 10 Player, Pioneer DVD-RW DVR 107D drive, Cyberlink Power DVD
6.0 software, Creative Audio PCI ES1370, SB PCI 64/128 (WDM), 2-Seagate
18.2 Gb Hard Drives.
Audio CD's play just fine. I suspect my Creative Audio sound card is not
hacking it. Anybody have any advice or suggestions. Thanks.

I think your processor is not hacking it. Seems under-powered to me to do
this type of work.

Hello William;
Thanks for the reply. This could be the cause. Do you know of any test to
establish that the processor is the guilty party? Does XP have an Event
Viewer perhaps.

XP has an event viewer but I do not think it will show you anything. You can
try.

start>run and type

eventvwr

Good Luck

I think you need more processing power. You should check the requirements
for burning DVDs. I know some DVD burning programs will have a testing
program.

Hello again;
You mention burning CD's. I do not have a problem with burning, my problem
is with playback. Are you suggesting the procedure I should use is to rip
the DVD to the hard drive and then burn to a CD for playback purposes.
Thanks for the help. My ignorance on this subject matter is showing.

I am sorry about the DVD burning, I should have not said that.
You should check and see what mode you are in for the DVD player. You should
be in DMA mode not PIO. To see this go start>run and type

devmgmt.msc

then find IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, expand this, right click on "Primary
IDE Channel", select "Advance Settings". Look at the Current Transfer Mode.
Do the same for " Secondary Primary IDE Channel"

IDE Channel", select "Advance Settings".

should read 'IDE Channel", select "Properties" then "Advance Settings".

Hello William;
I checked the settings as you suggested and they are in the DMA MODE. I
conducted one experiment that may shed some light. If I "minimize" the movie
being displayed the audio comes through clear as a bell. This seems to
support your theory that my AMD 1.2 Ghz processor is being overtaxed,
because the audio is fine when the system is not trying to support the
picture and audio simultaneously. In my early profile of my computer I did
not mention that my two Seagate hard drives are both SCSI. If you have any
other thoughts I would appreciate them.

Sincerely
Melvin

Yes it sounds like your processor is the guilty party, have you tried
eliminating some background processes (this could be the guilty parties as
well). What type of ant-virus software are you running. Have you tried
disabling it? Please remember if you do this, you should disconnect yourself
from the internet.

Hello again;
I am running AVG , Ad-aware, Spybot S&D, Norton, SpywareBlaster and
HijackThis. As you can see, I am totally paranoid about viruses and other
nasty stuff. I got Norton for an Xmas present and that is why it adorns my
Desktop. I'll try your excellent suggestion and remove Norton first. I won't
forget to disconnect from the Internet, Thanks again.

PS: I will reply to this thread.

Are you running AVG and Norton at the same time. If so, you shouldn't. They
might conflict with each other. You should only run one anti-virus software.

Don't uninstall Norton, you can just disable it.
