DVD +/- Formats

I have been using DVD-R format for my home DVDs. I just
updated my dive and now I have +/- (both) capabilities.
What is the difference/can you refer me to a good source.
I know this is a basic question, but haven't had any luck
finding a good source to explain the advantages. Thanks,

No real difference as far as a PC is concerned, but some DVD standalone
players don't read all formats.
