In a laptop, is it acceptable to leave a DVD in the drive all the
time? Does it stop spinning after awhile, or does it keep running?

Thanks!

Should only spin when accessing the DVD.

As for being "acceptable"... That's a little weirdly worded.
As for being a "good idea" or "could it be harmful"?...

I don't see how. The DVD 'locks' into place in a laptop drive.

Why? First, the use of the DVD cdrom, whatever it may be, has
been deprived from other equipment. Second, whenever the laptop
is started, the OS will check on whether the DVD disc is bootable.
Third, if there is an application associated with the DVD, it will
be running at startup. Determine the need and decide.

Shenan,

By "acceptable", I meant: "Is it a good idea". Judging from your answer,
since the DVD doesn't spin while not in use, then it's not harmful to leave
it in the drive all the time.

Thanks!

GHalleck,

It's my daughter's new laptop. She keeps is plugged in and on standby
all the time, so bootup is not an issue. Secondly, it's a DVD with data
only. So, it looks like it wouldn't be harmful to leave it in the drive.

Thanks!

If it is going to be plugged in all the time one might consider removing the
battery. Batteries can get pretty costly, the added resistance (even though
it is in an off mode if it is fully charged) causes additional heat or so I
understand. While the dynamics of battery construction beyond a basic
understanding (and the advanced switching used today) are a bit more then
I've time to study I do know that added heat reduces lifespan for electronic
components of all types.
