DVD Drive problem

Ive just had to re-install XP, not a shocker there.

Before i had to do that my NEC DVD RW ND 1300A CD/DVD +/-R/RW drive worked
perfectly.

Now, after the re-install, it will play CDs perfectly, but it will only play
DVD video (no sound) and if i put a re/recordable DVD in the drive, XP
recognsises it as a CD not a DVD.

I am running the very latest firmware and drivers for this drive. I have
also gone through Device Manager with a fine tooth comb, there are no issues
or conflicts.

Any ideas on the cause or the fix?
 
What was the original problem (its unusual, in my view, that XP would have
to be reinstalled).
