DVD Drive Audio Port

I just installed a Pioneer DVR-108 DVD burner as a second DVD drive.
The first drive has an audio cable from the DVD audio port to a port
on the mother board. I didn't have an audio cable for the DVR-108, but
the DVD plays movies with full sound anyway.

Just what does the audio connection provide?

Thanks, jimbo

As far as i know it's only for audio cds. I don't use the cable on either of
my drives as i have it set to 'digital audio'.

The cable just passes the analog audio from regular audio CDs. When
playing DVDs the audio soundtrack is read digitally and then converted
into a analog stream (unless of course you are using 5.1 playback
direct to a 5.1 device).

The optical drive audio cable is only used if you are using a pre-XP OS. In
XP the sound also comes over the data cable so the audio cable is not
needed.
