No audio playing DVD movies

I have finished building my current system, and everything is in working
order... Except I can't get audio when playing DVD movies in the DVD
drive. All other audio works fine -- I can play audio CD's, Mp3's, AVI
and MPEG files with sound, etc., and video on DVD movies is fine, but no
audio. Any idea what the problem is? Do I need to install a special
audio codec that's missing? Do I need to attach digital audio on the
DVD drive (This poses a problem because the audio is on the mobo and
there's no digital audio connector that I can find, unless that's what
the AUX-IN connector is for)?

Here is my setup:

Mobo/chipset: Epox EP-8NPA7I, nForce4 4X
Onboard Audio: ALC655, AC97-compliant
CPU: AMD Sempron
DVD drive: Plextor PX-740A
OS: Windows XP Home SP2 OEM
Media Players installed: WMP-9, Nero Media Player OEM

If it is a problem of lacking an audio codec, your application should tell
you about it. Maybe CSS or CSS2 (copy protection).

Only if you had problems getting digital sound modes like Dolby Digital to
work. The two wires are signal and ground. Both/all channels are
transmitted digitally to be decoded e.g. by a 5.1 Soundsystem.

AC97 usually doesn't have an internal digital input connector, so the
digital output of your DVD drive will have to wait for further hardware
upgrades. E.g. some soundcard with a digital input on the card and a
digital output jack to be connected with a 3.1/5.1 soundsystem.

AUX-IN is "the same procedure" as CD-IN. Three wires for left, right and
ground. It can be used for TV-cards with internal stereo output to be
connected internally. When I have a drive and a burner installed, the
CD/DVD-drive usually goes to CD-IN, the CD/DVD-burner to AUX-IN.

Your problem sounds to me like some copy protection since everything seems
to work fine with usually unprotected sources. To verify this, get some
DVD-Authoring software installed and make a DVD from one of your MPEGs with
sound. Guess that's the shortest way to narrow down the problem.

I'm running Linux, so sorry I can't recommend a DVD-authoring tool known to
work on Windows "out of the box" for testing.

I had the same problem, this is how I fixed it.

In Windows Media player click Tools - DVD - Advanced - Output, in that drop
down menu select "Stereo."

Before I did this, everything else worked fine like you except DVD audio.
For some reason Nero had no problems playing DVD's so I knew it had
something to do with Windows Media Player.
