A really fun problem

Ok, I have been building a computer and have finally finished it. Yeah!
Everything was operating fine.

I'm using windows 98se. It has an ECS motherboard, AMD AthlonXP 2600+, 256
MB Ram, 64 MB Video Ram (MSI MX400card). It has a 80 GB WD Hard Drive as the
master on the primary ide channel. a 4.1 GB WD Hard Drive as the slave on
the primary ide channel. A Lite-On DVD/CD Rom drive as the Master Drive on
the secondary ide channel and a Lite-On DVD burner as the slave drive on the
secondary ide channel. I also have a media card writer installed using a
internal usb bus. A scsi card, tv tuner card, modem and that's about it.
Drive letter assignments are a & b floppy, c & d hard drives, e, f, g & h as
removable for the media card writer and i & j as the optical drives.
Everything was working fine, I think.

I then installed updated nvidia drivers for the video, but I didn't like the
way the mouse was behaving. It would slow up, so I downgraded back to the
original video drivers and everything was working fine.

I installed symantec systemworks 2003 professional. Now, I'm unable to play
dvd movies using cyberlink powerdvd. However I am able to play dvd movies
using the interactual dvd player. Also, I am unable to play audio cd's using
windows media player. I get a error message saying "Windows Media Player
encountered an error when reading the CD_ROM drive in digital mode. Click OK
to switch to analog mode. Click Cancel to retry playing in digital mode." I
click OK and get "Windows Media Player encountered an error when reading the
CD-ROM drive in digital mode. You can try to use digital mode again of you
can switch the Player to analog mode." It then gives me a choice of CLOSE or
More Information. Clicking the More Information gives me Error
ID=0xC00D11F8, Condition ID=0x000000000 along with instructions to switch
the playback mode. But when I follow the instructions I highlite the drive,
click properties and get nothing. But I can play audio cd's using winamp.

One other point, on the optical drive installations, the DVD/CD-ROM drive I
have the audio cable connected to the motherboard to CD2 and the DVD Burner
I don't have the audio cable connected because the CD1 pins are too narrow
for the cable that was supplied with the drive. However, that didn't seem to
cause any problems before. Also, I can't really be too sure about the
problems with the Windows Media Player since I had never tried to play a
audio CD on this system.

Any thoughts?

I've come up with 2 solutions.

1> 'F' windows 98 get windows xp and

2> 'F' windows 98, 'F' Bill Gates get Linux.

Thanks

Craig

One word. Symantec.
Your problems all began after installing Symantec bloatware and you want to
blame Microsoft?
I do think you should consider moving from 98 to XP, but with your present
hardware, perhaps a clean install of 98 (SE, I hope) would do the trick.

How bout trying spybot and other spyware removers, that could be 1 of the
problems.

I agree with Peter, I've worked on many computers that have been
messed up by Symantic. Stay away from utilities like that. I've
never seen a good one.

I also agree that XP is the hot ticket but if you can't afford it,
uninstall the Symantic, see if everything works again, and if things
are still messed up reinstall Win 98 (clean install).

Hmmm, well I had Symantec install was a replacement of the 2001 Systemworks,
so not sure about that.

XP wouldn't be a problem, just a hassel to port over files and such. But it
may come to that. <groan>. I'm waiting to see what cyberlink says. When I
open the program information tab in the configuration it show Playe Region
Code and "Not Specified' . I want to see if cyberlink can give me a fix.

You are going to Love this. Like you, I have spent days looking,
trying...
Go to www.drivers.com and get Aspi32.exe. Download and open the file
to install, then reboot. It worked for me! Can't take all the
credit; some other guy had the idea in some obscure posting of an
unrelated issue. File gets corrupt somehow. You should see all the
postings I had to read through. Good Luck.

I'm sorry, that would be www.DriverGuide.com or any other site that
has drivers. Just type the file into google and you should find a
site. By the way, I like Norton Utilities/Symantec Bloatware.
