Neither drive is recognized under device manager nor my computer. All cables connected, power led's on front of units initiate cdrw spins, dvd dormant.Tried to find new hardware etc. Somehow the windows cdrom device drivers have been deleted? I have windows disk and recovery disk but cant boot from these due to this problem.

You rock! I had this same problem and was pulling my hair out for days trying to figure out what it could be. I even bought a new drive and was just about ready to uninstall XP when I found this message thread. I used the .reg and it worked like a charm. If only XP's "help" were as helpful. Thanks!!
