CDRW/DVD missing

My CDRW/DVD as suddenly disappeared. In device manager it show a message
"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be
corrupted or missing (code 39)"
I can boot from the XP CD so I assume that the drive actually is working. I
have searched the web for a driver but the site for drive says it has no
driver that windows xp provided it. As I cant use the drive I cannot get to
search the CD to replace the driver.
Any suggestions please. I don't really want to do a complete reinstall as I
live in a very remote area and the best internet connection I can get is
25Kbps so it takes forever to update windows.
Thanks
Peter.
