CR ROM no longer detected - Driver error message 39

My CD ROM is no longer being detected. When I open the device manager, there
is a warning that says "Windows cannot load the device driver for this
hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"
I followed the troubleshooter recommendation and un-installed the device and
re-installed it. Even downloaded the freshest drivers and flash update for
the CD with no sucess. I figured the device failed, so I just went and
purchased a new Sony CDRW/DVD ROM and connected it all back up with the same
results. I burned several CD's over the holidays and have installed no new
devices since that time.
Any help is appreciated.

Hi Blastoff,

See if the information in this MSKB article helps you to resolve the problem:

CD-ROM access is missing and messages cite error code 31, code 32, code 19,
code 39, or code 41 after you remove Easy CD Creator in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/en-us
(please note that although the article references Easy CD Creator, there are
other third-party software packages that will cause the same "problem" to
occur).

If you don't want to manually edit the registry, you can d/load and run the
registry patch that is available here:
http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.php#problems
(look at the second "problem")
