cd-rom / code 39

Out of the blue i have a code 39 on my cd-rom. A code 39 is / device
status - windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. the driver
may be corrupted or missing. Ive tried several different woking
cd-readers and get the same code 39. Ive tried a driver search and windows
says this is the best driver for this device. <driver details - microsoft
version 5.1.2535.0>..... Ive used the installation disk - same problem.
To me this seems as if i have a problem with the windows driver <os/windows
xp home .> and i dont know how to correct it. I would be thankful for any
help on this issue.
