I have gone thru the posts and replies and still need help. My computer does
not recognise any dvd's to write to.Error message is please insert disc into
drive. I have checked the recording tab in the properties and everything is
ok. My sonic came installed on the pc. I also added nero and still nothing.
What can I do? I have been told that my problem is software related and not
the burner.

Are you sure its a DVD burner? Not a CD Burner. Why don't you post
the model of the drive.
I would agree with you that adding Nero would or should make a viable
writer.
Have you tried CD-R's and not DVD-R's just in case its a CD only?
Other than a bad drive, yes, you are back to the issue of software. Not
much else to look at.

I checked the flap where it is and its says Uniscribe DVD + - Writer, CD
Writer. HL-DT ST DVDRRW GWA 4166B
Also I uninstalled the drive and reinstalled it.

Hi Larry,

It may be the type and brand of DVD Disks that the DVD Drive can write
to. Try a DVD-RW Disk and a DVD+RW Disk. If you make a mistake, you can
start over.

Are you using Nero's InCD? To use the Disk as a Floppy disk, where you
can write to as well as erase or delete what you just wrote or copied to,
without erasing the entire Disk.
I have tried dvd+r (Fujifilm), dvd+rw (sony),dvd-r (LG). The version of nero
express is v 5

CD repair for XP:
http://aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip

Also try the following. You should back up the registry before making
changes:

Click Start, Run, type Regedit, click OK.
Locate this Registry Key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
Key Name: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Value Data: [Delete All Value Data from UpperFilters and LowerFilters]
Note: Do not delete the Key or the Multi-String Values. Delete only the
data values.
Exit Registry and Reboot

My take is that the laser which reads/writes DVD is either dirty or broken.
Whomever told you that the problem is software related is not necessarily
correct.
You can try one of the many DVD lens cleaner disks. Otherwise, I would quit
fighting the problem and replace the drive.
