DVD Burner (Hardware) is not recognoized by Windows XP Home Editio

I had a young man that had a small shop next to the Laundromat in Long Beach,
WA
(1) Installed a Maxtor Hard Drive 5-13-04

(2) He also installed a new MS XP Operating System, Home Edition. He would
not supply me with a copy of the operating system, or give me instructions of
how to make a copy.

I argued with him for several months, contacted MS, but never got any
answers or help or copy of it.

Since he did this work, I could never use the DVD. Sometimes I could use
the CD burner.

3-25-07 NOTE: I am thinking that correct settings were not done in
operating system, thus causing DVD to not work

I have about 7 GB of photos on this hard drive that I am concerned about
possibly losing. So, I thought that I probably need a new DVD/CD burner. I
thought that downloading updates from MS Media Player; Real; Roxio; Etc. made
my older DVD & CD burners not operate. I now think that I am wrong.

(3) I know that these have not worked since that young man put the hard
drive & operating system in. I think he did not set something correctly, so
these things can be recognized.

(4) Just recently I had a neighbor take out a DVD, disconnect the CD still
in machine, plug in a new Samsung DVD/Multi Recorder called Writemaster. It
is said to automatically put a driver in machine & it should recognize it.
IT WILL NOT WORK !!
I am supplying a copy of the shipment sheet listing this product.
In part it says Item is: DVD-Burn Samsung SH-S182M/BEBE BK % Serial #
Q6036GIP11803W BSBN
On the item itself the number’s are: F/W=8B03 Jan2007
(I purchased 02-28-07)

Also, the neighbor downloaded six times some thing called “firmware updateâ€
from Samsung. It is in C drive & My Documents. These should be deleted, I
believe.

How can I get my DVD/CD to me recognized & work?

does your drives show up in device manager ?

There could be several things wrong. I would start with this.

Open My Computer | Right click the CD drive | Click Properties |
You should see a recording tab

If there is no recording tab, your drive is not recognized as a recording
device.

CD Recording tab missing

See both of these MSKB articles.

He installed illegal OS, or trial, or stole yours. Even OEM OS's are
on CD's and he must give it to You.

OS should automatically recognize any optical device, if not disabled
in hardware configuration, or BIOS (check IDE settings)

Check jumper positions on HDD and DVD. It is possible that they are in
conflict ( both set to master or slave) if on same cable
How can I get my DVD/CD to me recognized & work?

In worst case - bad motherboard.
Solution: Find some other "young man"/computer service to set up
computer properly. There is no misterious reason for DVD not to work.
