WinXP reinstall - now DVD burner won't record.

I had to reinstall WinXP and now my DVD burner isn't recognized as a
DVD burner. When I try to burn files to a DVD, an error message
appears asking for a writable CD (not DVD). The drive used to show as
a DVD RW Drive but now is showing as just a CD Drive. I right click on
the drive and go to Properties and then into the Hardware tab, it
shows a NEC dvd_rw nd-3500ag in the list, which is my burner. Yet it
won't work like one.

I seem to remember having this issue long ago when I had to reload
WinXP, but I don't remember the fix. Can anyone offer some solutions?
Thanks.

Reinstall the DVD burning software you were using before you reloaded to
operating system.

To burn DVDs, you need a DVD *burner* thingy, not a reader.

: Hi windmap, this is probably a dumb question but I have a DVD reader, can
: programs such as NERO be used to make it burn DVD's too or do I need to
: replace the DVD thingy.. (LOL, sorry about the thingy).

And yes, Nero is an okay software to burn, once you get a dvd burner.
And a dvd burner will also burn cd's. (all that I've seen) so you get
two for the price of one.

Ok, I definately have a DVD burner installed, but I have not yet
reinstalled my Nero.

But any comments as to why in Windows explorer it currently lists my
DVD burner drive as "CD Drive D:"? Does installing Nero fix that to
then show "DVD-RW Drive D:" ? Or is that a moot point?

Thanks.

Have you installed the drivers for your burner as well? These should be
on a CD and you will need to install them. XP doesn't have generic
drivers for DVDs. I am not sure if SP3 has any!!

You could right-click on the icon and rename it DVD-RW (Drive D will be added by windows).
But it will still not burn DVD's until you install a 3rd party burning software.
XP can only burn CD-R disks without 3rd party help.
