DVD Burner doesnt show when I have a disk in

My computer came with a preinstalled DVD and CD burner. I can sucessfully
burn audio cds, but whenever I try to burn or copy something to DVD I keep
getting the message, "put a disk in the drive" when I have already done so.
My system obviously recognises the drive but not for the DVD part.. Any ideas?

What software are you using to write to the DVD? XP does not have any tools
for this. 3rd party software is needed to write to DVD.
