new external cd burner help

hello, how do i get my new cd burner to be the one used to burn cds? when i
take items and put them into the 'window' for items to be burned onto a cd,
my laptop doesnt allow me to use my new external drive to burn them. it wants
to use the nearly broken burner that is forever built into this gateway pile
of ----. how do i get my laptop to use my new external burner to burn my cds
instead of the old dvd burner that came with the laptop? the burner itself
works fine when used with normal cds, but i cant seem to make xp pro use my
new burner to actually burn. thank you.
