DV (Camcorder) input via Firewire

I have Vista Ultimate on my Dell Dimension 3000 - 2Gb ram, Nvidia 128mb
graphics card (just manages Aero), Adptec DVpics Plus 1394 Firewire PCI card.
All appear in device manager and have up to date drivers.

When I connect my DV source (JVC GR-D340EK camcorder), I get the normal bing
sound and Movie Maker brings up the import source dialog box, after couple of
seconds it will then inform me that it has been disconnected, turned off
etc.... Which it hasn't. This is very fustrating as it all worked fine under
XP SP2 about a month ago when I last used this.

Any suggestions ? is the Firewire card okay even though vista says so in
device manager ? I have tried to use WinDV as well and it doesn't recognise
the source either which makes me think it is the firewire card isn't working
correctly ?

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Cheers.

Did you ever solve this? I have the SAME issue. My JVC GR-D350 camcorder
was working properly via firewire on my well-equiped Vista Home Premium
machine. Then beginning a few weeks ago, a couple of seconds after
connecting the camcorder, Vista says that the camcorder was disconnected,
which it wasn't.

This camcorder works properly on an XP machine in the house; and another
camcorder works properly on this Vista machine, with the same fireware cable.
Could a Vista patch have killed me here? Could it be a driver issue?

Any ideas much appreciated!

Seen this in XP also. I would plug in a digital camera via firewire,
get the ping sound, then after a couple seconds either Windows or the
application would say no device connected which was as frustrating as
hell since I was looking at a preview from the camera so I know it was
connected if just for a few seconds. Problem was XP saw two devices to
use to connect the camera and picked the wrong one even if you have
some selection box within the application that lets you choose the
other one. The quick fix was to go to this dialog box and just switch
from the device XP thought it needed to the one I KNOW it needed then
both XP and the application was fine and I could either upload or
download from the camera without problem. Thankfully the software I
used showed all the devices so I could switch back and forth. This
problem just came and went off and on and I never could figure out
why. Thankfully for me didn't happen often. This sure sounds like the
Vista version.

It could be the application, not Windows. My guess was since the
application could remotely control the camera it would try as soon as
handshaking was established. However if the camera was already saying
through the firewire cable, hey I'm awake, lets do something then the
camera instead of getting turned was actually turned off and then
Windows tried to turn it back on but picked the driver it wanted to
use instead of the one it was suppose to use. So another case of
Windows trying to be helpful Henry by just picking a driver to get it
started again. I know it don't help your problem, but at least you
know you're not alone. Just another one of those goofy things Windows
in famous for.

The only suggestion would be go to the application you're trying to
use with the camera off. Then turn the camera on and for good measure
have the firewire cable out of the camera or computer whichever is
easier, then plug it in last.

So this combination of events seems to work best for me:

1. go to what software you're going to use to control the camera.
2. turn on camera.
3. plug in the firewire cable at either the camera or computer end.

Windows should respond with the ping sound and keep your fingers
crossed it don't drop the connection and then try to reset it on it's
own which seems to be the source of the problem, at least mine.

Thanks so much for the reply. I tried the sequence that you suggested, but
without success.

FYI the application that I am attempting to use is simply the import video
function of windows movie maker that came with Vista. When I click on
'import video' I don't have any way at all that I know of to select an input
device; it simply says that I don't have ANY input devices. I have an old
Intel webcam that works (from its own application), and of course my DV
source (the camcorder), but neither is recognized in movie maker.

When I plug in the firewire cable, the inport video function comes up, and
then goes down about 5-10 seconds later. This, even though everything worked
100% properly for a couple of weeks when we first got the PC earier this
year. And I do not recall mucking with the PC at all once we got everything
working, which is why I suspect that something came down from Microsoft
Update.

Hi,

I too have the same issue with Vista. Mine is JVC DR-G372U. When
switched on the DV, Vista says it is connected and we can even start
rewinding the tape. With in 5-10 seconds it prompts saying the device
is disconnected. It works fine with my XP laptop though. I use the
same FireWire cable. Please let me know if anybody got any solution to
this.

My apoligies to all, I fixed the problem but didn't post it.

I ended up disabling the firewire card, then removing the driver. Re-start
windows and then enable firewire card, make sure the camera is plugged in and
ON. Then windows will pickup the new hardware and install the correct driver.
This should then have everything working fine !!!

The reason is that in XP firewire cards could be used as networks cards, in
Vista this feature has not been allowed. By reinstalling the driver with the
camera plugged in it recognises it as firewire rather than a network card.

Hope this helps....

I have read these posts with great interest as I have exactly the same
problem with my JVC GR-DVL9000. It worked fine on my XP Computer but not my
new Medion with Vista Home Premium. I would be very grateful, as I am not
very technically knowledgeable, to know exactly how to disable the firewire
card and remove the driver. I am concerned that I might do something
irreversible.

Your help would be appreciated.
