Duplicate Outlook Today folders

R

Rick B.

Somehow I have created duplicate Outlook Today folders. And they continue to
update/mirror each other. Can I delete one without screwing up the other
and if so, how?

If this has been asked and answered before, sorry but I didn't see an FAQ
area.

I have one large (181MB) .pst file.

Unfortunately Paul, it looks like this question has stumped the Outlook

It hasn't stumped anyone.
You simply provided no information that would permit an answer.
"Somehow I have created..." doesn't tell us anything that allows us to
troubleshoot.
Also, you did not post your Outlook version.
This question is asked and answered here daily for users who provide enough
information, so look at some of the other posts to find one that matches
your situation.

Old method but still works:

To remove extra PST(s) from the folder list:

Outlook 97 or Outlook 98/2000 (Corporate Mode)
- On the Tools menu, click Services.
- Highlight Personal Folders service you want to remove and click "Remove".

Note: Standalone users require 1 Personal Folders Service. Those connecting
to an Exchange server normally do not use a Personal Folders file when mail
is kept on the server.

Outlook 98/2000 (IMO [Internet Mail Only] Mode)
- On the View menu, click Folder List.
- Right click on the root folder of a folder list.
- Right click on the root of the extra set of Personal Folders and choose
"Disconnect" or "Close".

For the most stubborn of PSTs that will not remove from the folder list.

IMPORTANT: The following information contains information about editing the
registry. Before you edit the registry, you should first make a backup copy
of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat). Both are hidden files in
the Windows folder.

- Start RegEdit (Win9x/NT) or RegEdt32 (NT).
- Navigate to:
* Win9x users
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows
MessagingSubsystem\Profiles\<your profile name>
* WinNT users
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\WindowsMessaging Subsystem\Profiles\<your profile name>
- Look in the tree under that point (it should be full of keys with long
hexidecimal value names) and look for a section that references the PST file
you want off of your folder tree. Export that section (for safety) and then
delete it.

the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal

Hey Russ, don't get your panties in a bunch.

Look at Milly's answer. She didn't take offense (and there wasn't meant to
be any in the first place) and tried to help.

Milly:

First of all, thank you for your non-judgmental help.
I'm using Outlook 2002 on a standalone, non-networked Windows XP Pro
computer at home.
I don't see either "disconnect" or "close."
When I say I "somehow" created two folders that's exactly what I mean--I
don't remember doing so, at least not intentionally.
As nearly as I can tell, I don't have two .pst files, per se, (only one big
..pst file) but just two sets of
personal folders.

If I hit highlight one of the data files and hit "remove" will I end up
deleting my one and only .pst file or is this what I need to do?

Granted it doesn't take much to confuse me, but this sure has.

Thanks again.

This helped me fix multiple iaf restore /multiple personal folder problems.
Also cleared up a password requirement for contacts at Outlook's opening. I
deleted the contacts folder in one of the unwanted personal folder, but kept
asking for a password for it. Your advice allowed me to "close" this
personal folder. Thanks, Milly.

Yes, but as you can see the absence of pertinent information means that an
accurate answer could not be provided. I took no offense. I simply pointed
out that you did not provide enough information to permit an accurate
answer.

In Outlook 2002 you most likely corrupted your profile by trying to migrate
data from an earlier installation. Removing or closing a PST file will never
delete it. But it will probably not be possible to do so in your case. Your
best option is simply to create a new profile from scratch and configure it
to use your PST file. Make sure you've taken care to note the name and
location of the PST file you want to use. If you don't know how to create
profiles, look here:

I have several folders that I want to show up in outlook today. I
wanted to reorder the way they are displayed so I unchecked them all
in "customize outlook today". Now when I go to recheck them in the
order I want them displayed, I get a message saying: "The folder you
selected does not let you search other folders at the same time. To
search other folders, clear the check box next to this folder." For
one the folder is not checked and two it will not let me check them
anymore. Anyone know how to fix this? Thanks

You have corrupted your mail profile somehow. Create a new one in Control
Panel>Mail.
