Duplicate Names

Running W2k Server in a workgroup with Netware 5. Servers are accessed
through 2 HP ProCurve 24 port 10/100 switches that are stacked. W2K server
has dual nics with static Ips and are divided between the two switches. We
are receiving this error:

A duplicate name has been detected on the TCP network. The IP address of the
machine that sent the message is in the data. Use nbtstat -n in a command
window to see which name is in the Conflict state.

In order for all clients to access the Netware server, a cross over cable
was installed between the switches. Could this be the cause and if so, how
do we fix it? Has anyone used W2K's Netware Gateway and what were the
results?

First of all, the duplicate name is probably coming from the W2k server's 2nd NIC (since you are probably using NetBEUI on both NICs), the way to fix this is to unbind NetBEUI from one NIC, but not both. Your other option is to configure your WINS server as a Mutli-Homed server.

Windows 2000 GSNW (Gateway Services for NewWare) is not compatible with NetWare 5, and NetWare 5 is not compatible with TCP/IP to connect to a Microsoft Network. Therefore your solution is to install CSNW on all your machines (including your servers) and also IPX/SPX.

The best thing you can do here is upgrade to NetWare 6, as it's compatible with
TCP/IP.
