Dungeon Siege - Exception Detected

M

Michael Mauzey

I am playing Dungeon Siege (original game was included in retail expansion
pack of DS: Legends of Aranna) for
the second time. Occasionally I would get an:

EXCEPTION DETECTED;
Gathering Exception Data - Note: This may take a minute or two

and then the game would shut down and I would get Microsoft's infamous
"We're sorry CRAP". Lately, it is happening a LOT ... anyone have any ideas
how to fix
this ? ... Microsoft offers NO support (surprise, surprise!)
and when I used their Search, it came up with nothing.
I had a similar problem with another game and it was caused by having too
many saved games ... but I only keep 4 or 5 saved games on Dungeon Siege, so
that can't be the problem. Thanks a lot in advance ...

Hi Michael,

Even though you're having the issue with DS I, since DS LOA
is installed, you should try these steps to identify corrupt files:

B. Known Issues Corrupted Files Errors While playing the Dungeon Siege: Legends
of Aranna, you may receive a fatal error similar to the following: ==A fatal
error has occurred and the app must be shut down. Decoding error! Compressed
data is either corrupt or unreadable, possibly due to hardware failure. Try
replacing or repairing the resource file (reinstall?) To fix this problem.
File on disk: '' Internal info: resource = offset = <0x00000000>
size = crc = <0x00000000> last error = <0x00000000> ==This error denotes
that the game is having trouble reading from one of its files. This corruption
can occur in multiple places:
1. In memory.
2. While the data is being read from the hard disk.
3. In the data files (.dsres) on the hard disk. To test the files on the disk,
add the following to the command line of your Dungeon Siege shortcut:
"verifydata=true" (without the quotes).

NOTE: This ONLY TESTS the integrity of
the files, it is NOT A FIX. The test takes a few minutes and will tell you if
you have any corrupted files (remember to remove the verifydata option from
your
shortcut after running the test). If you DO have corrupt files, please see the
following Microsoft Knowledge Base article for further information on
uninstalling/reinstalling the game: http://support.microsoft.com/?kb=321083. If
NO corrupted files are found using the verifydata=true test, the corruption is
occurring in memory or while the data is being read from the hard disk.
Dungeon
Siege uses your computer's hardware to its fullest potential, and is therefore
sensitive to over clocked, tweaked, modified, or faulty hardware. Because of
this, Dungeon Siege may appear to be the only application which fails. Imbued
Items May Show Up in Inventory as Large Potions To revert the graphics to
normal, save the game and reload it. This should revert things to their proper
appearance.

Jimmy S. .. thanks for responding. I am not receiving any fatal errors ..
just a box that says:

EXCEPTION DETECTED;
| Gathering Exception Data - Note: This may take a minute or two

I don't understand what you mean about adding verifydata=true to the command
line of my shortcut. When I tried to enter that line in my shortcut
properties
in both the "target" and the the "start in" line, I get an error message
that says the "path specified is not valid and to make sure the folder
exists and that my path is correct."
Microsoft does NOT care at all about their product once they've gotten their
filty lucre for it ... I'll just not buy from them again.

Thanks for trying to help .. I appreciate it! Michael Mauzey

In addition to what Jimmy has tried to assist with, you might want to check
out this Knowledge Base information for Dungeon Siege:
http://support.microsoft.com/dungeonsiegefaq There is general
troubleshooting guidance, plus information which might be useful for you on
improving game performance.

If you're receiving an error message, there also may be something as simple
as one of your drivers hiccupping at certain points under stress. You might
want to investigate the Event Viewer in Control Panel/Administrative Tools,
under both Application and System listings in the left pane. Errors are
denoted as either yellow triangles with black exclamation points or red
circles with white X's in them. Those can be right-clicked, with a
selection of Properties to see a portion of the error message.

You may be able to correlate the issue you're seeing with an "event" and
pinpointing what is faulty.

Hi Michael,

The article doesn't explain how to add the switch, sorry.

1. Save a new shortcut to your game on your desktop
- The fastest and easiest way is to copy an existing Shortcut:

2. Right click the Shortcut and select Properties

3. Edit the Target line in order to add the command to the end
- For example: The Target for the game might be
"G:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\DS.exe"
- You would add the command to the end of it as so:
"G:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\DS.exe" verifydata=true
or
"G:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\DS.exe" -verifydata=true

4. Click OK and double-click the new shortcut.

I don't think you guys understand, the error is non specific, as plain as can be.

I have the same error, and I'm running normal dungeon siege, not LOA, and my error starts the minute I start the game, when the white dots appear one by one at the bottom while loading.

The whole error reads:

Exception Detected!
Gathering exception data...

"Exception Detected!" is the window title, and there's a question mark in a blue circle in the box.
