DUN question

If anyone remembers their pre-broadband days I'm having a problem with DUN.
It started popping up soon after I log on and tries to connect to the net.
I have to keep the modem phone line unplugged to stop it, but it continues
to try again and again. Evidently I changed something I didn't mean to. Any
guesses? I tried the DUN dialog's properties but couldn't find anything. I
looked at the network wizard but evidently it only works for LANs. I tried
Help & Support from the Start button (evidently you have to be on line to
make this show up?) but didn't find anything. I couldn't see anything that
looked appropriate on the Control Panel. There's evidently a DUN setup
somewhere I missed.

Ideas? Suggestions? Using XP Home SP2.

TIA.

If you still can't locate the problem under the DUN settings, and this just
happened, why not just use System Restore to roll back to an earlier
checkpoint?

If you don't use ( or need ) the modem, I'd check to see if you can set
it's operating mode to disabled in BIOS setup. If you open up Network
Connections and there is no Dial-Up connectoid you just need to rerun
Network setup informing XP it uses a Broadband, Always on setup. If
you can disable the modem in BIOS, you'll need to delete the "Phantom"
modem entry in Device Manager. After removing the modem, XP can't
enable or make calls to a dial-up connectoid for web access.

Are you actually using dialup? I can't tell from your post. If you are, then
something you have installed is starting with Windows and needs to connect
to the Internet, possibly a browser or some program trying to do updates.
In that case, you'll need to manage your Startup to find out what it is.

If you are using broadband and getting this, go to Internet
Properties>Connections and either remove the dialup networking entry and/or
select the option to "Never dial a connection" or "only dial if a network
connection is not present".

This can also be a sign of malware so making sure your computer is clean is
A Good Thing.

Manage Startup - Start>Run>msconfig [enter]

This brings up the System Configuration Utility. Look on the Startup tab and
find the probable culprit. Uncheck the box next to its name, Apply and OK
out. You don't need to restart immediately, but the next time you do you'll
get a dialog saying you've used the Utility. Just tick the box that says in
effect, "don't bother me about this again".

Important - Do not use the System Configuration Utility to stop processes.
Instead, use Start>Run>services.msc [enter] and do not stop any services
unless you really, really know what you're doing.

If you don't use ( or need ) the modem,

Sorry I wasn't clear. Yes, I still use DUN and a modem. This problem occurs
when I wish to use the computer without going on-line - word processing,
spreadsheets, reading email, whatever - or another computer is using the
phone line.

OK, Then you'll need to configure Internet access and use either the
option "Dial when a network connection isn't available" or the more
direct "Never dial a Connection". The other issue you face is that the
items you list frequently attempt web connection for updates, etc... &
not all of those have option boxes to disable the web checks.

Where do I find these on XP Home? I've looked at the properties in the DUN
dialog several times but do not see anything like these options. Sounds
like exactly what I need.

This Comaq DUN is totally different from the eMachine DUN sitting beside
it. The DUN I am having problems with on the Compaq goes on right after
booting the system. It dials out without asking. If I go off line it
immediately comes on and dials. The eMachine never does this. But as far as
I can tell the DUN dialog properties are both set the same. The choices you
mention above must be elsewhere.

I ran a complete scan with an anti-spyware ap (SUPERAntiSpyware free
edition) yesterday again and it found nothing. As soon as I get it updated
I'll try another anti-spyware ap (Micro Trend) I installed earlier today.

Open the network properties section for your modem connnection. Select the
advanced tab. Click setting for Windows firewall. Natively, XP allows
Files and Settings Transfer Wizard, Network Diagnostics for Windows XP, and
Remote Assistance, unless you disabled any of these during the modem
installation or somewhee else in XP in administrative tools. Is there
anything else allowed in that section on your PC?

Yes, I use DUN in XP w/SP3.

Disable "Log on using dial-up connection" (Line 77)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Right click My Network Places/Properties/Advanced (top

Disable autodial while I am logged on.

In the Enable Auto-Dial By Location dialog box, select each location

This is what I did. Worked very well. Thank you very much.
