dual scanner problem

I am trying to use a HP 5510 4-in-1 printer/copier/fax/scanner in one of my
USB ports and a Visioneer 4400 scanner in another USB port. When both are
connected, I get an exception with the following message in my control
panel/system/device manager/imaging devices: Windows cannot load the device
driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is
still in memory. (Code 38). The Visioneer scanner has better options and
resolution than the HP 5510 (in the scan mode) so I would like to be able to
use the Visioneer scanner but the two do not seem to get along together.
Each scanner will work fine without the other plugged in. Any ideas or work
around would be welcomed.

You have already found the work around. Just plug in the scanner you want to
use leaving the other disconnected.
It is a known fault with Windows XP that has existed since it was launched.
I think that there are not enough of us multiple scanner users around for
Microsoft to come up with a proper solution.

I agree with Richard above. There is no fix available at this time, you can
connect only one scanner.

Thanks much for your responses. I guess in view of the advantages of the XP
system, I can work around the issue. ô¿~
