Dual OSs

John W.

I am about ready to install Windows XP home edition on my
machine which is already running Windows 2000. At first I
was going to format the C drive before doing the install,
but I was hoping that it's possible to leave Win 2000
where it is and just install XP 'next' to it, to be able
to have both operating systems available. Is that
possible? Is there documentation on how to do this?

Thanks,
John

Boot from CD and do not format the drive. Choose to install XP on a separate drive or volume. (Separate partition)

C: drive for Windows 2000
D: drive for XP

The following advice is located at:

How To Create a Multiple-Boot System in Windows XP

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;306559&sd=tech

Precautions

Before creating a multiple-boot configuration with Windows XP and another operating system, review the following precautions:

* Before attempting to create a multiple-boot system, be sure to back up your current system and all data files.

* Each operating system must be installed on a separate volume. Microsoft does not support installing multiple operating systems on the
same volume.

* If you have only one volume on your computer, you have to reformat and repartition your hard disk to contain multiple volumes before you
begin creating a multiple-boot configuration, unless you are simply installing another copy of Windows XP.

* Do not install Windows XP on a compressed drive that was not compressed using the NTFS compression utility.

* You have to use a different computer name for each operating system if the computer is on a Windows 2000 or Windows XP secure
domain.

* Install the operating systems in the following order:

1) Windows 2000
then
2) Windows XP

In order to dual-boot Windows XP with Windows 2000,
you'll need to install Windows XP on an empty drive or
partition. If you only have one existing partition (C:),
then you'll nee to use a third-party partitioning program,
such as Partition Magic 8, to create a new partition without
disturbing your Windows 2000 installation.

A good third-party partitioning program is Partition Magic 8.

How do I remove dual OS's? I accidentally installed Win XP Pro twice, and I
still have 2000 Pro on there, I would like to remove one of the XP's and the
one 2000.
