dual moniter, it doesnt let me have seperate displays, rather only lets me
clone the laptop display onto the other screen. Can anyone help me?

Only if the card supports dual monitors... which is unlikely.

Without knowing the make/model of the laptop and knowing what graphics
chip/card it has it is not easy to answer your question.
Can you provide a link to the user's manual for your laptop?
It is not unusual for laptop graphics not to support extended desktop mode
due to the amount of graphics memory required and/or due to the amount of
additional power( and therefore heat generated) required.
