Dual IP Address Conflict

Where I work there are several PC's that require 2 IP addresses, one to acces
the internet and one to log into an application server. On some of the PC's
this functions with no problems, but on some of the new XP systems that I
just built there seems to be a conflict. Whichever IP address and gateway is
listed first works and the other does not. Or it will work intermittently,
sometimes funtioning ok, sometimes not? Am I missing something (a setting
somewhere, etc.) that will allow both IP addresses to co-exist without
conflicting?
All machines are new machines running Windows XP or one of them runs Windows
2000. The second IP address and gateway are added by going into the advanced
tab of the TCP/IP settings.

Thanks

Only the Ethernet port that leads to the Internet should have a
standard gateway.
