Dual core, only sees one

You need a new operating system kernel to be able to use both cores. You
get this by running install in repair mode. It is useless for me to keep
saying so.

Got both cores running. Did not install or repair.

this thread has gotten pretty long
so yes, I must have missed that..

I didn't mean it as a criticizm. It has gotten quite long.

I've got both cores running. With an install or a repair. I'll post a
message on how.
Now that it's sorted out,
time to upgrade to a quad core, of course <G>

There isn't a quad that'll work in mine. The board limit is 95 watts. This
one pulls 89. I haven't come across a quad for AM2 (not AM2+) socket that
didn't pull 100 or more. I could probably get away with it, but I'm not
feeling that daring. I need this machine to work.

OK. Thanks for all the advice and suggestions.

I now have both cores running. Didn't have to install or repair or anything
like that.

I got a suggestion from someone off-group and it worked.

1. In msconfig, go to "Boot" and "Advanced options."
2. If "Number of processors:" is checked, uncheck it.
3. Check "Detect HAL"
4. Reboot.

5. System comes up, flails around for a while, says it's installing a device
driver, and tells you to reboot.

6. Do it.

7. In msconfig, go to "Boot" and "Advnaced options."
8. Uncheck "Detect HAL"
9. Check "Number of processors"
10. Select 2

11. Reboot again.

That's it.

I now have both cores working and the system is notibly snappier than it was
before.

Again, thanks all.

It's been quite an adventure.

This would probably be why:

Detect HAL - When there are multiple operating systems installed on the same
hard drive partition, Detect HAL searches for the different versions of the
HAL that are installed on the computer and adds a prompt that allows you to
select which operating system to boot to.
