Dual booting Windows 98 and Windows XP

Hi,

I had a dual booting system with 2 hard-drives, 1 with Windows 98 on it and
1 with Windows XP on it. I moved the hard drive with Windows XP on it to
another computer with a hard-drive running Windows 98 on it, but now I can't
get this computer to boot Windows XP. It always loads up Win 98, even when I
use the boot manager to try to get it to boot form the Win XP hard disk.
When I only connect the Win XP hard-drive, the system boots up, but then
stalls and asks for a boot from floppy.

Help!

Thanks
Michael

Hi Michael,

On the old system, the installation had placed the WinXP boot files on the
primary installation (C:\). As this condition does not exist on the new
system, there is no boot loader. To fix this, boot the WinXP CD, run the
Recovery Console. From the command prompt, run bootcfg /rebuild.

Hi,

Thanks for that, but I'm still having problems. I run the bootcfg/rebuild
and it finds my Windows installation, I then call it WindowsXP and set the
options to fastdetect, but I then get an error message saying "Failed to add
the selected boot entry to the boot list". If I try running Fixboot that
also doesn't run.

Any ideas?
Thanks
Michael

Hi,

With the hardware change, you may need to run a repair install. This will
also fix the boot loader. Follow these steps to do a repair install which
should preserve your data, settings, and programs:

1. Insert the Windows XP CD into your computer's CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM
drive.
2. Restart your computer. If you have to, change the BIOS settings to start
from
the CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer again.
3. At the "Welcome to Setup" page, press ENTER.
4. Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement.
5. Use the arrow keys to select the installation of Windows XP that you want
to
repair, and then press R to start the automatic repair process.
6. When Setup is completed, activate Windows XP.

Note that you will need your Product Key for this procedure, so have it
handy before you begin.
