Dual Boot System, XPhome/Win 2K

Hi
I want to delete the Win 2K on the E logical drive. Can I
delete the Win 2K at the E root in explore?
Do all the files of the OS reside in one folder and is
that the system folder? If I were to go to the E drive
(logical) and delete the system folder and edit the
boot.ini folder would that remove/delete the Win 2K OS?
My goal is to free up the E partition and use it for
files and data.

Hello, Scott.

The system partition is first partition in the system.
Since you mention that the Win2000 OS is in the E (logical) partition, may I
presume that the Windows XP was setup in the first partition? If this is
the case, you can simply format the partition in Disk Manager.

To get to disk manager, do the following:
At Start\Run box, type the following "DISKMGMT.MSC" (without quotes)
Once in Disk Mgr, right click E drive and choose format. You will get a
warning that all data will be lost. Choose OK.

Hi Scott,

Your plan is sound, and there is no need to format, just delete the Win2K
system folders and edit boot.ini as you propose. Windows (most modern
versions) can be installed to any volume or partition, but the boot files
will be installed to the active partition. Removal is as easy as the steps
you have already described.

Hi Rick
I think I have a handle on the plan but where I fall
short is when I go to the root drive E, in Explore, I'm
not sure which system folder has the entire OS for Win
2K, i.e., does the System folder contain all the files
for the Win 2K OS? What should the size of the system
folder be? Thanks for your help.

Hi Scott,

Generally, it's either \Windows or \Winnt and should contain all the Win2K
system files, though you may have installed programs elsewhere. How big
depends on what's installed, but it'll be somewhere between 500MB to 1GB
most likely, though it could be larger. But deleting it is all you need to
do.

You could simply format as well as was mentioned by the MS poster as long as
a) there is no data on this partition that you wish to save and b) you are
absolutely 100% positive this is not the boot partition.
