Thanks for the link, some good info.
For the record: My procedure for the "cleansing" of the second boot
system seems to be working just fine. Also, the deletion of the second
boot link in the boot.ini seems to be working -- finally, but I was
getting some wild startup results for a while. In msconfig, I couldn't
switch to Normal Startup from Selective Startup without reverting to the
original boot.ini file (the option for new or old boot.ini was whited
out) and the reboot went crazy if I selected old (probably because the
second operating system had been removed from the D:\ drive). I had to
start in Last Known good configuration, and then in msconfig do the
boot.ini surgery and restart in Selective Mode. I think that finding
and manually editing the backup boot.ini file is what finally led to a
solution, but as I recall it still took several start ups before
everything got resolved. At that point, I had stopped my methodical log
keeping, so I can't say just what happened.
