Dual Boot 98SE/XP Pro SP2: Suddenly no menu and no access to XP Pr

I have a dual boot system with Win 98 SE on Drive C (Fat 32), Win XP Pro SP2
on Drive D (NTFS). System worked well for months, but recently system froze
in XP. I turned off computer. On restart and ever since, no dual boot menu
screen appears. System immediately boots into Win 98 SE. I enjoy Win 98 SE
nostalgia (mostly for kids old games) but need XP Pro. Boot.ini on Drive C
seems unchanged. NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM are present on Drive C, but I do not
know whether they are corrupt or not. I seek enlightenment, and hopefully a
return to dual boot bliss.

Try an XP Repair
From within 98 insert the XP CD and start the installation

Once you have pressed a key, setup should begin. You will see a reference
asking if you need to load special drivers and another notice that if you
wish to begin the ASR (Automatic Recovery Console) depress F2. Just let
setup run past all of that. It will continue to load files and drivers.

Then it will bring you to a screen. Eventually, you will come to a screen
with the option to (1) setup Windows or (2) Repair Windows Installation
using the Recovery console.

The first option, to setup Windows is the one you want and requires you to
press enter. When asked, press F8 to accept the end user agreement. Setup
will then search for previous versions of Windows. Upon finding your
version, it will ask if you wish to Repair your current installation or
install fresh. Press R, that will run a repair installation. From there
on, follow the screens.

Here is a very simple method to restore your dual boot menu:

1. Get a copy of bootpart.exe from
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/gvollant/bootpart.htm
2. Press F8 during the early boot phase, then boot into a DOS prompt.
3. Run this command: boot winnt boot:c:

When you reboot then you will most likely see your normal boot selector
menu.
