My computer keeps sending and receiving, even when it should not. The
Ethernet light is continually blinking. I have eliminated Spyware and Virus
problems. My first question is HOW DO I FIND OUT WHAT IS TRIGGERING THIS
CONTINUOUS TRANSMISSION. I do not know how to find out what is being
transmitted. Ward

G'Day Ward,
My computer keeps sending and receiving, even when it should not.
By this, you mean when you THINK it should not.

Even if disconnected, the Ethernet card may attempt to communicate. When
connected it is constantly "keeping in touch" with your ISP's server.

For example, if the connection goes down you will get a message to that effect.

It knows because it keeps checking..........

All that light means is that there is activity on the ethernet line. Some
may not be directed to you. The NIC should only respond to broadcast
messages and to messages directed to your computer. The NIC transmits those
and only those to the driver.

Also, the NIC is expected to broadcast its MAC address at periodic
intervals. That is one way that other computers know that your computer is
on line.
