DSL problem still exist.....

The original story: I switched to DSL about 2 to 3 months ago. Everything
was running great
untill a month ago. DSL will work for about 5 minutes then all activity will
seize. The inactivity will last for about 5 to 10 minutes then activity will
continue again. At first, restarting the comp will help, then when it got
worse I tried the "ipconfig /release" and "ipconfig /renew" command. This
worked for a while then stopped working too. My last resort was to restore
my comp to an earlier time. This seemed to work for a while, but now it
stopped working too. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? I know my
router and modem are fine, because the other computer connected to it is
fine.

I got a Dell Dimension 8250, running windows XP with P4 2.66, 512 RDRAM,
with Intel Pro 100M Ethernet card.

recently I tried "netsh" series of commands, and clicking repair under
"local area connection", they will jump start my lost connection, however
not for long. Anyone have any idea what is the cause? Help will be greatly
appreciated...

Kuchinu,

Try and define the problem a bit more.

The next time this happens:
From a command window:
1) Ping www.yahoo.com.
2) Ping 66.94.230.33.
Report success / exact text of error messages.

Get a graphical repeating ping program like PingPlotter from
<http://www.pingplotter.com/> (30 day trial), that will graph your network
performance over time. PP is very configurable - you can have it ping every
second, to every hour. Use it to look for patterns, and to look at what your
network is doing when these problems start.

Get Process Explorer (free) from
<http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml>. Provides way more
information than Task Manager.
And Port Explorer (free) from
<http://www.diamondcs.com.au/portexplorer/index.php?page=home> will show you
what network connections your computer is actually opening, and what processes
are opening them.

Between the three tools, you should be able to see what your computer is doing
when these problems happen, and decide whether your ISP should be involved. And
a PP graph will show in very clear terms what the patterns are, if you do have
to involve your ISP.

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.
