What's going wrong? Here lately, I have been getting on boot, a huge popup
headed with "Help and Support Center" showing my CD drivers are obsolete. It
lists cd4_2k.sys and cdralw2k.sys.
Under "more info" it says that the driver might have been installed by Easy
CD Creator, Windows Media Player or RealJukeBox.
My Easy CD Creator won't work with XP and they won't supply a patch for less
than many bucks so I removed it. It does smell like the drivers were
supplied by Easy CD Creator because the manufacturer listed is Roxio. If I
remove and yes, I tried, the "obsolete" drivers, the computer won't even
recognize the CD's as being there and they were working just fine for the
last year.
I wouldn't have RealJukeBox on my machine so I know that isn't it.
I do have Windows Media Player with XP so I went to the web site source the
popup suggested and it said that just going there was all I had to do and
that the problem was fixed. Yes, it fixed it all right, the computer wouldn'
t recognize the CD's just like when I previously deleted the 2 drivers it
advised me to do. I looked all over for the disks with the original drivers
(couldn't find them) and then realized that what would I do with them
anyway, the CD's were dead. I got them back up by going to system restore
and restoring the system from 9-1-03 to be sure it had all the wrong things
that had been happening backed out.
What happened to the drivers installed when the CD's were installed? I did a
net search for drivers at Plextor and Asus without success. I have Plextor
12/10/32A and Asus 52X and came up blank.
Sorry for the novel but what is XP doing to me? Shouldn't XP pro have built
in drivers for so simple a task?
Thinking back, this may have started after I downloaded an XP "update". I
did back out the last update by backing up a month and this morning on boot,
I didn't get that popup. Related?? I'm afraid to re-download that update.
