windows doesn't recognize cd

i have a xp home system that windows doesn't recognize any cd's that are
inserted into the drives. i know the drives work because i can boot up with a
knoppix live cd and read cd's and play music in either drive.

i have removed the upperfilter and lowerfilter registry entries and removed
the drives from hardware manager and let windoze rediscover them and have
looked for updated drivers for the cd drives.

any other ideas?

That means that you can't see the drives listed in My Computer, right?

If you can see them, then the autoplay function of the drives is not
setup.

i can see the drives under my computer. it doesn't matter if it's a data disk
or a music disk. i get the message that the disk isn't recognized.

i ran the microsoft cd autorun fix. and it says that there are problems, but
it can't fix them. i can attach the log files if you want.

like i said, i know the drives work because i can use them under linux. %$#$
windoze.... :)

Are the optical disks PATA ( Parallel ATA ) or SATA based ? If PATA
you sometimes need to remove the Primary or Secondary controller from
the ATAPI/IDE controllers category in device Manager. Another thing to
consider is a firmware upgrade for the drives. Usually, after flashing the
firmware and a reboot, XP will automatically re-enumerate the device as
a new instance in the CD/DVD category. Also you should check the
controller Advanced (TAB) and make sure the appropriate taps are
set to Auto detection.

they are pata drives.

i have removed the controllers and the drives and they reenumerated ok. the
dvd drive in the chain seems to work ok on dvd's, but if i put a data or
music cd in it i get an error saying "windows cannot read from this disk. the
disk could be corrupt or an incompatible format." i put a new dvd/rw drive in
in replacement of the hp cd/rw drive. it reads dvd's ok, but data and music
disks get the same error.

any new ideas? ty for your help so far.

i can put a dvd into the pioneer dvd drive and it reads it ok. if i put a
data or music cd in i get a "windows cannot read from this disk. the disk
could be corrupt or an incompatible format."

i replaced the hp cd-rw drive in the chain with a dvd/rw and the same thing
occurs, i can read dvd's but not data or music cd's.

i checked the autoplay stuff and it seems to be set properly. dvd's are
recognized and it reads the label. data and music cd's show up as cd drive.

thanks for your help so far. any other ideas?
