Drivers Won't Install

I have been attempting to install a Creative Zen Micro MP3 player and the
drivers will not install from the supplied CD-ROM. It gets 80% through the
driver installation and I get a pop-up window telling me "Creative Driver
Setup has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for this
inconvenience". So I click the button to send it to Microsoft. It continues
the installation after the window closes and tells me it has successfully
installed. But...it can't find the device when I plug it in as asked!!! I
have gone to Creative's web site and downloaded the drivers and after I plug
the device in, the Hardware Installation Wizard still cannot find the
drivers. I have gone so far as attempting to install after a clean boot with
the same results.

I have Windows XP Home Edition with SP2 and all current updates on the
update website for Microsoft. I'm thinking it is another gremlin of SP2, but
I have installed other hardware with no problems. The only other thing that
I have noticed since SP2 installation was WMP 10 won't recognize my CD or DVD
burner while Sonic RecordNow recognizes both. Wierd!!!

Any help would be very much appreciated as Creative has no idea!!!

Please look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Warning and Error Reports over the last 2 days use and post copies here.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body
of the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error
Report complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first
paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

Check Add/Remove programs in Control Panel for any Creative Zen
software listed. If found, then Click Remove. The driver package for
it is encapsulated, usually as a single .Exe file. What you need to do is
let the package decompress. Usually, it will do this as a sub folder at
C:\Windows\Temp or ask you to specify a location. When the setup
routine runs, minimize it or Alt-Tab to switch to a Explorer Window.
Locate the decompressed Driver package and copy to a permanent
location. What you are interested in is the .Inf from the decompressed
folder. Right Click that and from the context menu left click "Install".
Now when you insert the Zen, XP should have the proper .INF to be
able to install the driver. Before doing this check Device Manager and
make sure you have no "Other" Category or in USB devices, that are
listed as Unknown - if either exists Uninstall then complete the steps
above and after loading the .INF insert your Zen in a USB socket.

Are you using MSN Messenger?

Do the errors disappear if you uninstall MSN Messenger.

Alternatively:

Posted by "Anonymous" at eventid.net:

"Error code: C0000005 - I would get this event on every boot, and like
another user who posted here, it was caused by having MSN Messenger 7.5
starting automatically when Windows starts. If I run MSN Messenger after the
boot has completed (i.e. manually start it), there is no COM error recorded.
To disable Messenger from running automatically, open MSN Messenger, and go
to Tools -> Options -> General -> and uncheck 'Automatically run Messenger
when I log on to Windows'."

Hope this helps.

Gerry,

I have MSN Messenger 7.0. I saw your post and went ahead with the uninstall
and then tried installing the Creative software again. No Go! Same thing!
At 80% of the driver install, is stops with a Creative Driver Setup
encountered a problem and needs to close window.

I happen to have a second PC in the office with Windows 98 SE on it. I said
"What the heck", and decided to try the install on that PC. The MP3 player
and all related software work flawlessly on it. But...it is just a basic PC
that I use to entertain my child with her learning programs and games.

I'm still searching for answers and it doesn't help that it's the holiday
and all the manufacturers are closed. But I do send out a great big THANK
YOU to you for sticking with me on this. Any more ideas are greatly
appreciated!!!

I'm almost ready to do a Service Pack 2 uninstall but I am just not sure
what it will do to this PC. Service Pack 2 has been on here since it's
release, and I have had very few problems other than what was stated on my
initial post in this thread.

BTW...My name is Jeff. :)

What Creative Zen Micro MP3 Model number. They seem mainly to be
portable players.

The model number is DAP-M0004. It is a portable player. The software is to
setup the drivers and media center to sync the MP3 player. I believe that
the only thing that is not installing is the USB drivers for the player.
When I plug it into the USB port, the install software wizard cannot find the
correct software to run the device. Even when the CD-ROM containing the
drivers is in the drive.

Try installing the software before the hardware.

That's how I've been doing it Gerry. That's how the software prompts you to
do it. It asks you to plug it in after the driver installation.

But that's where the whole thing goes awry. I get that error 80% of the way
through the drive install. After I send the info to Microsoft and the window
closes, the installation continues. Asks me to plug in the device and
doesn't sense it. But then the XP programming takes over when it senses a
new device being plugged in and begins a search for the installation software
which it cannot find every time.

Things that make you go hmmmmmm! LOL! Thanks Gerry!

This line leaves me floundering "Things that make you go hmmmmmm! LOL!
Thanks Gerry!"

Have you just discovered the Browse button or decided not to let Microsoft
auto find?

I do the recommended function everytime until it gives me reason not to.
Like in these circumstances. Then I tell it where to go because I know that
it is located there, and it still comes back with an unsuccesful search for
the software.

Sorry for the humor remark, but the only thing I can do short of formatting
and re-installing the OS is laugh about this now. I was told by a separate
source today to do a boot from CD-ROM System Recovery. All of this just for
a dawg gone MP3 Player.

But again...thanks for sticking with me on this! I do appreciate all your
input!!!!

Does the USB port work properly with other devices?

Have you tried another USB port?

What drivers are installed for the USB port?

Hope this helps.

Yes...other devices work properly on the USB ports I have been using. I
even went out and bought a new 2.0 USB 4 port PCI card and installed it.
Then went through the entire install process with the same results.

The USB port drivers for the factory installed USB ports are provided by
Microsoft and dated 7/1/2001, version 5.1.2600.0.
