Installing Drivers in Safe Mode?

R

Richard In Va.

I've just upgraded to WinXP-Pro along with a new hard drive for C:\.
Thinking that this would be a good time to update my drivers, I downloaded
the new audio driver for my Audigy 2 sound board from Creative Labs.

During install XP shut down stating that a system file (don't remember which
one) in the /system32/ folder was missing or corrupt and recommended that I
boot to the recovery console to repair the problem.

I wasn't able to do much within the recovery console, but after several boot
attempts Windows booted up normal and all things seem to be fine, except
that the driver is not fully installed.

Question:

Would it be a good idea to install the new driver while in Safe Mode to
prevent this error from happening again? Or should I play it safe and use
the driver on CD that came with the sound card several years ago?

Any heads-up or advice is appreciated!

RE-INSTALL THE SOFT, NORMAL MODE. IF YOU WANT MORE UNINSTALL NORMAL MODE. IF
YOU HAVE SEVERAL BOOT, IT`S GOOD TO CLEAN THE HD AND INSTALL YOUR OS AND
YOUR SOFTS. MAYBE HAVE PROBLEM IN YOUR REGISTRY OR WINDOWS IS CORRUPTED.

Try checking in Event Viewer for exact message.

Run chkdsk.

It might have been an idea to have noted down which file. Googling for the
file name itself often turns up useful information.

Example: I recently bought a new PC but could not get CDs and DVDs to
autorun. Event Viewer told me that a particular file was missing
(MFCANS32.DLL). A quick google told me that this was a standard XP file
that should be on every system. A quick copy from another PC got me up and
running.

Why do you feel the need to shout?

Thanks M.I.5-3/4",

I did note the filename mentioned in the initial XP shut-down error message,
although it's written down at home and I'm not there right now but it's one
of the .nls files... something like "c_1256.nls".

After I got booted back up, I see the file is where it's supposed to be and
I don't see anything in the event log.

Maybe the sound board driver installer tried to tamper with the system
file... no clue here. I have not tried a second time. But I am still
wondering it drivers could be installed while in safe mode to prevent this
error from happening.

Thanks for your help here.... to Google is always a good idea!
