is there a driver for the HP 2500C pro deskjet that works under XP? I've
tried a PCL3 and a PCL5 driver, but the OS doesn't like the first,
(DJ169EN.EXE) i.e. it complains that there's not enough memory to print a
picture from MS Photo Editor, and it refuses to complete the installation of
the second, (DJ770EN.EXE) so that's of no use.

any recommendations?

thanks,

Get a different photo editing program, MS Photo Editor has
that problem. Visit www.hp.com and get the best driver
available. Then completely uninstall and disconnect the
printer and do a clean install.
The firmware upgrade is dated 1999, so you should already
have that.
If all else fails, buy a new printer.

Unfortunately, HP has only one driver posted, and that the older of the two
I've tried. Neither works properly with XP, though they're fine with 2k,
NT4, Me, and 98SE.

The Photo Editor (same version) works fine under 2K, Me, and 98SE. I can't
imagine a better program. It does very well and it's really easy. I've
looked, for example, at GIMP, but never managed to get it do anything at all
beyond displaying pictures and graphics.

This printer works GREAT on other OS', but XP doesn't do well with it. I
suspect it's the driver, but it could be the OS. I've had nothing but
trouble with it. Sadly, some of my tools don't work under other OS'.

Surely you jest about that "buy a new printer" option. Do you know what
these things cost? The ink alone would pay for most other printers,
including ink.

I'm pretty sure this is a printer driver problem, since the photo editor
works fine with other printers. What's more, the photo editor isn't the
only app in connection with which this printer malfunctions. OTOH, while it
doesn't malfunction totally with other app's, it does malfunction with the
same app's in other OS'.

Surely there's a driver somewhere that actually works with this seeming very
practical printer. It takes the place of several other printers in my lab,
since it has two trays and is capable of holding letter, legal, and tabloid
paper. When it's working, it also does a pretty nice job on pictures.

No, I wasn't jesting. If HP doesn't have a driver that you
can make work and contacting HP directly for help is not
possible (you don't want to call or write) then buying
something new may be your only option.

BTW, MS doesn't write drivers, so your problem isn't Windows
or MS's problem. They cost a lot less now than they did a
few years ago.

When I was young and working, I had lots of money and girl
friends, but once was, isn't still always true.
