Driver problems Epson stylus C64

I recently purchased the abov printer and have installed the Driver with no problems however when I try to shut down the computer it will not shut down on its own and requiresme to manually press the off button. When restarting the computer the printer does not communicate and fails to print. The usb port is working okay, the computer is a packard Bell
800 mhz processor and the ram has been increased and I am running windows XP has anyone any ideas what is wrong, I have followed the troubleshooter with no luc

There is a driver on the Epson site with a 09/30/03 timestamp, may be newer than the
one that shipped with your printer.
