driver is enabled but not started

i am using windows xp when i try to play music i get the error code
0xc00d11ba condition id 0x00000000 there is no sound at all coming from my
speakers, system or otherwise.they were workin fine before when i check the
properties of realtek ac'97 audio it says driver enabled but not started how
do i start it? i really haven't a clue what i'm doin just tryin to use logic.

cheers for answering, i haven't got any other open progams, i did reinstall
the driver from the realtek web site that didn't work i also re downloaded
direct x i tried the trouble shooter but thst told me to alter bios and i
haven't got a clue how to do that- i can't find any cd that came with the
computer for audio or sound device it was prefitted. i had a look in devices
but it only had default device listed and that isn't working if i go through
control panel it says no sound device but realtek is listed in device manager
and says that it is working properly, is real tek the sound device? im v
confused

Back to basics. If you have a jack on the back of your PC to plug in your
speakers that means you have a sound device (soundcard) installed.
Are you getting any system sounds like beeps when you boot your PC?

hi thanx for gettin back to me yeah i have beeps directly from the computer i
have since found out i have a fujitsu siemens branded on board sound card
thingy it's built in to the mother board. i have managed to get hold of the
drivers and utilities cd that came with the computer i have tried to
reinstall the drivers from that but it hasn't worked. everything else is ok
the speakers are connected properly and working, the driver is signed and
windows is configured to use it it is also my default system. there on no
updates available on windows updates or from driver manufacturer. is it
possible windows media is causing this? the only other thing i can think of
is to run the product recovery cd rom is that even relevent? i don't want to
as i have so many music files and photos etc to back up. can u tell me if
norton antivirus has any issues with windows xp i seem to be having problem
after problem since i downloaded it. never had any trouble with panda. oh
yeah i checked the volume too it's fine! thanx so much for answering

Check this one item.
Rightclick volume icon, probably next to clock bottom righthand corner of
screen.
Click "Open Volume Control."
Top left of window, click Options and click Advance Controls
Now look if any items are Muted. If they are, uncheck them.
Also, click the Advanced button (if possible) and see if the sliders are at
center.
If you have an onboard soundcard, it could be your main problem. You can
disable the card and purchase a PCI Soundcard on eBay for $15 and up. A
real good Sound Blaster card starts at about $65

I have this installed on my computer. However, I have a bluetooth device
that is also installed. I chose to use the bluetooth for playback and now
...realtek is not avail in the drop down box for selecting which device to use
in the control panel SOUNDS....any thoughts?
