Downloads Stop At 99%

Hi, I have tried everything, defragged, system restore, disabled my firewall,
cleared out my cache, cleaned c & d drive. ran a symantec virus scan, I
have spysweeper also. My computer will only download to 99% and then just
stops. I cannot find an answer to this problem anywhere on how to fix my
computer. I'm on windows XP.
If you have the solution, I would greatly appreciate the help. I've had
this computer for 3 yrs. Never had this problem ever. By the way I am NOT
mega computer savvy, so please don't throw big computer terms at me. Keep it
simple as possible, Many thanks in advance.

if you are referring to
basic software downloads
and not microsoft updates,

then my suggestion is to
utilize a third party download
manager like :

http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/

Perhaps your anti virus is scanning the download just prior to it being
completed.
I noticed my downloads pause at 99% whilst a scan is in place and then
completes are the scan.
Just an idea.

Hi, this happens with ANY download. Even Microsoft ones, and other things
(non-Microsoft downloads). Thanks :)

Could be AV - see the last section in this post:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883260

I read that someone disabled this (changed this option to 1) and
downloads went past 99 to complete.

There is a certain risk involved I guess and it depends if you are
letting XP scan things or not, and I am not, but I don't have this
problem either!

What is yours looking like, and if you change it, does the download
complete?

well, the last 1% is a critical step
to finalize the downloads.

however, it is impossible to figure
out what is the cause of your particular
issue.

try the third party download manager
and see if it resolves the issue.

if it does, then it can be a workaround
for you as well as a clue.

a clue, because "it" was able to
circumvent the hurdle you have.

incidentally, I use the download
manager myself because of its
many features.

for example, if your last 1% is
still pending to be completed
then perhaps, your connection
is timing out prematurely.

the download manager will continue
to ping the server for a longer period
of time until it gets 100%.

Shut down virus programs and test.
