Downloading Windows Messenger?

I an trying to get a webcam working using a Panasonic Camcorder. At one
point in the instructions it says start Windows Messenger. I suspect this is
one of those irritating little things I got rid of at some point. Looking at
the MS updates website it seems to me that it comes with SP2. But I have SP2
installed. Can I download Windows Messenger anywhere on its own?

Actually you should DISABLE Windows Messenger in Control Panel, and
download MSN Messenger from messenger.msn.com

I don't think the former item has been updated in an eon.
