Downloading the same security update over and over again

What's going on?

I've been downloading the same security patch for the past 3 days and each
time it says successful, but if I check Windows Update again it still shows
up:

May be some temp. problem with Windows Update.
Are you running DirectX 9.0b?

I've been downloading the same security patch for the past 3 days and each

It appears that this is a common, though not invariable, issue affects a
number of folks. Go back to a System Restore Point prior to the Q819696
installation. (You always create a System Restore Point before any update.
Right?) Download and install DirectX9.0b instead, available on the Windows
Update site, in the recommended updates category, i.e. [Windows XP] under
[Pick updates to install] --- confusingly! This upgrades DirectX8.1 to 9.0
while at the same time incorporating a fix for the security hole ( The
original 9.0 without the fix has been renamed 9.0a).

If you are not sure which version of DirectX you have, click [Start] >
[Run], then type in dxdiag in the textbox > OK.
