Downloading Symantec Firewall/Norton Anti-Virus

My computer is brand new, purchased 6-30-03. It is
Windows XP home edition version 5.1.2600. I attempted to
download over the internet the above subject on 9-4-03.
It seems that the firewall portion installed just fine
but the Norton Anti-virus doesn't want to install at
all. When ever I attempt it I get a message that
reads "Unable to run virus detection need Internet
Explorer 5.0 or higher" also everytime I turn my computer
on the first thing that appears on the desktop is a
message that reads "A necessary component of this
function is missing or damaged (NAVPROD) go to Tech
Support Knowledge Base 1002,1." When I contacted Tech
Support they told me that I needed to install the latest
version so that the AV can function better and to go to
support.microsoft.com. Now, here are my concerns and
questions: I have heard nothing but horror stories about
updating Windows and since my computer is only 2 months
in-use why should I even have to update in the first
place? Does Microsoft recommend a particular Firewall-
AntiVirus-Spamblaster-Security provider? How would I go
about updating the IE version that Symantec is
recommending, I'm no whiz at this stuff in the first
place. Since 9-4 I have been without AV protection, I
have sent numerous e-mails to Symantec for help and have
made numerous attempts to correct the problem to no
avail. Now they send me to support.microsoft, I feel as
though I'm getting the run-around here. Is there anyone
out there who can help me get this problem fixed? One
last thing, if I do need to update how do I do it and
what is the fee. Thank you in advance for your attention
to this matter and your assistance.

Seems you are stubborn not to follow professional advices, rather accept
rumors. Who can advise you against yourself?

Uninstall Norton Antivirus. If you encounter
an uninstall issue, use the following removal tool:

How to uninstall Norton AntiVirus by using the Rnav2003.exe removal utility
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2001092114452606

Use the above utility to remove all traces of a previous version of Norton AntiVirus.

I would suggest you install a comprehensive internet security package
to help avoid possible security breeches.

Norton Internet Security 2003
http://www.symantec.com/sabu/nis/nis_pe/

-- Includes Norton AntiVirus 2003
-- Includes Norton Personal Firewall
-- Includes prevention of annoying web pop-ups
-- Includes Parental Controls
-- All in one, easy-to-install package
