this only happens while working from one of our offices.
no other office in our network has this problem. while
trying to download small word docs from a client site we
get the following error: Internet Explorer cannot
download *.doc from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx. The connection with
the server was reset.

I am running XP Pro sp1 with IE 6.02600.0000.xpsp2.030422-

Hi Jon,

Thanks for your posting here.

In my experiencse, this issue can be caused by the settings in Internet
Explorer. Let us try these steps to troubleshoot;

Step 1: Delete temporary files
------------
1. Start Internet Explorer.
2. Click Tools -> Internet Options.
3. On the General tab, click the Delete Cookies? Delete Files.
4. Click OK and restart the Internet Explorer.

Step 2: Delete Hosts File
------------------------
1. Click Start, and then click Search ->For Files or Folders.
2. In the Search Companion dialog box, click "All files and folders".
3. Type "Hosts" (without quotation marks) in the "All or part of the file
name" box
4. In the "Look in" box, choose "Local Hard drives".
5. Click "More advanced options" to make sure that the "Search subfolders",
"Search hidden files and folders", and "Search system folders" are selected.
6. Click Search.
7. Delete all Hosts files that do not have the .sam extension.
8. Check if this issue can be resolved.

Step 3: Disable the Cache or proxy server of your ISP
-------------------------
To do this, please go to Internet Explorer, select the Tools tab and click
Internet Options. Then select the Connections tab and click the LAN
Settings button. On the LAN Settings dialog box make sure that all 3
available check boxes are cleared. In other words, disable the following
options:

1. Start Internet Explorer.
2. Click Tools -> Internet Options.
3. On the Connection tab, click the "LAN Settings" button.
4. On the LAN Settings dialog box, make sure that all of the following
options are unselected:

"Automatically detect settings"
"Use automatic configuration script"
"Use a proxy server for your LAN".

5. Click OK.
6. On the Connection tab, click the "Settings" button.
7. Re-do step 4.
8. Click OK and click OK.

Step 4: To enable "use http 1.1 through proxy connections"
---------------------------
1. After opening Internet Explorer, click Tools -> Internet Options.
2. Click the Advanced Tab.
3. Select ¡°HTTP 1.1?
4. Select ¡°HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections"
5. Restart IE and check if this issue can be resolved.

Have a nice day!

Bob Qin
