connection to the server was reset

Hi,

I have a little home network that uses Windows XP and IE6 with the
latest patches. Everything has been working fine until one day I was
trying to download a file from the Internet. The downloading proceeds
normally up to 99% and that is when an error pops up on the screen -
"Internet explorer cannot download (the file) from (the site. The
connection to the server was reset."

IE doesn't crash. This happens no matter what file I download, even
when they're as small as 362KB. I don't think I have installed any
programs recently that could have any conflict with IE6.

Any help will be deeply appreciated.

What type of file are you trying to download? Plain text, form, page with
graphics, or just graphics?

You might try the following and see if it helps:

First:
Safely Delete the Temporary Internet Files

I'll try the WinSockXPFix. Is there such a tool for Windows server 2003
as well? I noticed that it is only those computers running XP and goes
through the Windows Server that have problems. I have another windows
machine that goes directly to the Internet and it doesn't have any
problem downloading at all.

Thanks, that can sometimes make a difference as to what the cause and cure
might be.

I have no experience with the 2003 server, however, it is possible that
going through the server can cause problems, as can a router. Perhaps
someone else here can give you some suggestions related to the 2003 server.
It could also be some security or permissions settings that may be causing
the problem. Also, do you have any 3rd party software installed, such as
Google or Yahoo toolbar, or Yahoo companion? These can also cause problems.

Let us know how things go with the Winsock.
