download issues

i recently downloaded IE6 using windows 98. the problem is before and now
after the download i get an error message that internet explorer has
performed a fatal error and will shut down. this messages will appear twice
and then my whole desktop goes white. I cannot connect to the internet at
all using internet explorer. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Please clarify your post:

- You recently upgraded to IE6 on a Win98 machine?

- You were having this problem before you upgraded?

Did you upgrade to IE6 via Windows Update? Have you revisited Windows Update
since installing IE6 SP1?

Do you have a reliable anti-virus application installed and running
properly?

Upgraded using current windows 98. Used the microsoft update page.
Before the download I could still connect but within five minutes the error
message would appear, as long as i didn't click ok I could still be online.
Now I can't connect at all, with explorer. It will give me that error
message even if I am just playing around on the desktop, or running any games
from the cdrom.
Yes I went back to microsoft upgrades after the download of IE6 and tried
again, still have the same problem. Currently using Norton Antivirus 2005

IE Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing > Enable third-party
browser extensions (Requires reboot): Uncheck if checked and reboot.

Any better?
