Download and SAVE critical updates?

Is there a way to download but not install a critical update? I'd like to
create my own update CD to use when and if I clean install in the future.
The MS update CD only goes to Oct '03 so it is barely a help. I do this with
all downloaded programs I install and it saves a lot of time. There are too
many updates to want to do it all again.

Hi

So far, the only really important security update that is missing on
MS update CD is the ASN.1 Vulnerability update:

KB828028 http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS04-007.asp

To download but not install, you can use the Windows Update Catalog.
More about it here as well as some script install links/tips:

When you go to the windows update site, check the customize option
on the left side... then the catalog option... you may now see all
updates and download them to your hard disk (I think this also lets
you see all updates for all versions of windows, so if you have a
fast connection you may create a cd for a friend with slow links)

Two ways. You can go to Windows Update and on the left take 'Windows
Update Catalog' (you may need to check it in 'personalise update'
first). Then go to Updates for Operating systems, select Windows XP SP1
(get SP1 separately, see below) and you get to a panel where you can
put critical updates in a download basket to download and save.

Or when you get an update in the ordinary way, clear Temporary Internet
files first (for convenience) and when it comes to the point of install,
copy the downloaded .exe file out of there. That is the way for
'non-critical' ones

For SP1 either go to
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/sp1lang.asp
and get the complete 130 MB 'Network' download, or go to
http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/default.asp
and order that on CD for free - you will have a delay for delivery, but
it includes all security updates to February, as well, I'm told, as SP1

I used the Temp Int files method to copy the critical updates I had
downloaded previously to a new folder for future burn to CD. Slick! This
seems to work well for me and is quick and easy. They all seem to be the
correct sizes.
But a few clarifications, please:
There is no time between the completion of the download and the start of the
installation when you are doing an automatic update in XP Home, so I don't
see the opportunity of copying them "at the point of install". Does this
make any difference?

"That is the way for 'non critical' ones" leads me to think that there may
be a problem with the way I am doing this with the critical ones. Is there a
problem?

When I copy the files a [1] is appended to the end of the string and before
the .exe. I just backspace these out. Probs?

I assume that when and if it comes time to reinstall these updates I would
just double click on the .exe file from whatever folder they are in to start
the installation, correct?

Thanks for your time.

As long as you can still find the files, no. But you may find they have
been cleared up. If you want to do this, I would get Auto Update to
advise you when they are available, download and get them then

It was intended to accompany the method on getting a download basket at
Windows Catalog - that unfortunately only gets Critical ones. But you
have to use that if you have already got Critical ones on your machine
so that the regular update no longer offers them
