I will soon be installing a new MB and Processor on my home built comp, and
I will reformat my hardrive and reinstall my copy of XP. I am running XP
Home. I have the discs for Sp1 as well as Security Update CD. However, I
have installed many updates newer than the Oct.22 cutoff point on the update
cd. Is there anyway I can save all the critical and security updates that I
have downloaded and installed? I have dialup and it would take hours to
download the updates newer than those on the CD.
thanks

I have 64k ISDN (not much faster than dial-up) and I just re-formatted and
re-installed. I used the CD, and the critcal updates I needed after that
took 20 minutes to download.

You can't re-use the ones you already downloaded, but if you can get to a
place that has broadband, you can use the Windows Catalog site to download
the biggies and burn them to a CD.

They get initially downloaded as .exe file to Temporary Internet Files,
and you can copy them out of there if you catch them before it is
cleared in the ordinary way of things - but that will be too late for
now.

If you go to the following pages, in
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;nnnnnn
where nnnnnn is

835732 (Sasser worm patch)
837009 (OE Cumulative)
832894 (IE Cumulative)
828741 (XP Cumulative)
828028 (ASN 1)
837001 (Jet Engine)

and get the linked downloads, (about 13 MB in all) and add them to what
the Security CD installs (which includes SP1a) you will be getting
pretty near up to date
