download after the crash - will it work

My computer has been affected by the worm and is
repeatedly crashing. I was able, after many attempts, to
download and install the patch. Is this a sure-fire fix
for the problem? My Norton Utilities keeps indicating
(after each crash) that there is a virus that cannot be
corrected. What more can I do? The patch is already
installed?
