I have a Windows 2000 Prof laptop that I'd like to upgrade
to Windows XP Prof. What is required to downgrade it back
to 2000 Prof?

Thanks!

you must format your hard drive and reinstall 2000 is you wish to do this.
you can't just downgrade from the previous upgrade.

The Windows 2000 CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows 2000 to partition and format your drive:

1. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.
2. Insert your Windows 2000 CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows 2000.

5. Windows XP Clean Install:

If you save the previous operating system files (Windows 2000) during
the installation of the XP upgrade, and you will be asked if you want
to do this, then you can uninstall XP and revert back to 2000 by using
Control Panel- Add/Remove Programs.

Good luck

Not if the OP did an upgrade install and chose to keep the uninstall info -
he could just go to Add and Remove Programs and uninstall XP?

You would have to format the disk and reinstall Win2000 from its CD

An upgrade over 2000 does not provide (unfortunately) for backing up the
previous system. ONly upgrades over 98 or ME
